My daughter and I made a fun excursion to Wal-Mart recently, and when we came to the checkout line I said what I often say to the clerks in stores.

“How’s your day?” I asked. The clerk let out a big sigh.

“I’m tired,” she said.

“Are you at the beginning of your shift or the end?” I asked.

“Close to the end,” she said.

“Well, you’re gonna make it!” I told her, in my best cheerleader voice.

My daughter later commented on my kindness to the clerk.

“I try to see people,” I told her. “It’s easy to walk right past these people who serve us in stores and not even notice them.”

I liked her from the very first.

She was strong, straight-forward, and no-nonsense.  A real pioneer woman.  Hard-working and resolute. My husband's mother welcomed me into the family with few questions asked.

We got along just fine, she and I.

Because of dad's heart trouble, we invited her and dad to move in with us. That would be nearly 17 years ago now.

And we've been through a lot together since then.

Birth, sickness, laughter, late-nights, and loss. Good times and tough times.

Two strong women living in the same house.

3 Ways To Love A Growing Tween

I am not exactly sure when it happened, but one day I woke up and realized that my oldest daughter and I were now standing eye to eye. I will admit that I realized it was bound to happen soon, being that I only stand right at five feet tall!

This new vantage point feels strange.  However, it is just the evidence of what I already knew to be true.

She is growing.

This is the gospel. Can you picture the creation, the streams and rivers, the wind on your cheek, the leaves crinkling to the ground, the snow falling on the tip of your tongue, the beauty of the whole earth….. waiting with eager longing for the revealing of the sons of God? Looking ahead to its own future glory and freedom?

And today, in the fall, when the leaves are burning scarlet and I can so easily loose my breath when I take in the smell of fresh earth and feel the tangle of my hair from the wind sweeping past; I know my Creator a little more.
