Start Cultivating Today Who You Want to Be in 6 Months

Making lasting changes happens when we can envision where we want to be. If we keep doing the same things, we will end up with the same results. Start today by cultivating changes to be the person you want to become.

Have you ever put something off, only to think a few months down the road, “I wish I would have started this months ago?”

On a superficial level we can think this about about so many things: exercise, diet, beauty products, new habits, new routines. Basically anything we think might bring about some improvement — If only our past self would have just got going, we’d be a lot better off than we are now!

But we usually don’t start it (whatever “it” is) because we wrongly think, “I’ll get to it one day,” and that day never comes. Or some things we begin, but we give up because we don’t see fast enough progress. And yet, there we are months later wishing we just got started and stuck with it.

When it comes to the superficial matters of life, oh well, right? But what about the more important spiritual matters?

What Should You Have Already Started?

What do you know you should have started months ago instead of putting it off? What is that thing that would be pleasing to God, or make you more useful for ministry, or cause you to be more focused on eternal things?

Is it more time in prayer? Or maybe praying more for a specific issue? Reading books that will help you grow in godliness? Memorizing Scripture? Meeting with an accountability partner? Reaching out to certain people?

For example: what if you started memorizing one Bible verse a week a few months ago? Where would you be today? What if you even just did one verse a month? After a year, you’d have 12 truths stuck in your head! That’s a pretty low bar, and yet it has far better results than memorizing nothing!

What if 6 months ago you started spending only 30 seconds everyday praying for your husband? That would add up to about 1.5 hours going to the throne of God for the sake of your most important human relationship. And all it would have taken is 30 seconds a day!

What if you prayed for and encouraged one new person each week? After four months, you would have potentially made a difference in 16 people’s lives! Again, after just a tiny bit of effort once a week.

Start Cultivating Today

All that to say, where do you wish you were at today? What habits would be awesome to have already had engrained? What growth do you wish was already taking place? Whatever it is—don’t get discouraged that you’re not there yet, just start doing something today. And keep going. Baby steps. Isn’t that how most lasting change takes place anyway?

Not to mention, no change is going to happen if you don’t start changing something.

Or said another way, no progress will be made if you don’t start making progress.

Or again, You are not going to get to it “one day,” if you don’t just start it someday.

Let that “someday” be today. Your future self will thank you.
