The Ultimate Secret Weapon Against Family Secrets

Secrets. We all struggle under the weight of them at some point and suffer from the guilt and shame that accompany them. It was at a young age that it became painfully clear we couldn’t mention certain things or certain names around certain people.

Remember the shock you felt when your child outright lied to you for the first time? Haven’t we all experienced the large, innocent eyes denying they ate the cupcake as you (rather humorously) take in the ridiculous amount of chocolate smeared around their mouth?

And our response when our children let us down is automatic: they couldn’t, they didn’t, they wouldn’t.

But the Bible tells us that they will. Because we are all sinners, yes, even our precious littles.

Hidden things terrified me as our children have grown. I want our home to be different; rooted in truth, freedom and abundant life, but how?

“It is shameful even to mention what the disobedient do in secret. But everything exposed by the light becomes visible—and everything that is illuminated becomes a light.” Ephesians 5:12-13

What is done in secret needs to be exposed but I really didn’t want to be a paranoid Mom McSnoopy! I felt completely helpless against this unknown enemy.

“I lift up my eyes to the mountains—where does my help come from? My help comes from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth.” Psalm 121:1-2

Thankfully, it’s not up to me, I have help from the Lord Himself who knows every heart – wholly. On several different occasions throughout the last decade, I have said the scariest prayer I have ever prayed:

“Lord, if there are any secrets within the walls of our home, within the hearts of our family, I pray that You will expose them so we can extinguish the darkness with your light. In Jesus’ name, Amen.”

It has become my secret weapon, and it works – sometimes incredibly fast! And may I share that witnessing our children walking away from a struggle that never had the opportunity to become rooted in their hearts is the sweetest victory!

“Therefore, confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective.” James 5:16

Intercede for Others

We can intercede on behalf of others, especially our children. We can help expose secrets. We can bring healing and light to those around us. Prayer is the ultimate weapon and a mother’s superpower as it connects us to the source of all power; an Almighty God who also happens to be our good, good Father! Use it often!

In fact, let’s do that together right now.

Heavenly Father, we ache for the secrets our loved ones carry. We know because we have struggled against the weight of our own hidden things and thank You for Your faithfulness. We pray that You will reveal the secrets that our children hide from us so that we can gently lead them to You for healing and forgiveness. Whether it’s stolen candy, little white lies, or something far more serious, we trust that You will help us, help our precious ones live in the same freedom we have found in You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
