10 Great Questions To Ask Kids While Outdoors This Summer

10 Great Questions To Ask Kids While Outdoors This Summer

We can show our love and interest in our kids by taking the time to learn about the things that make them tick. Join me in making quality family time by asking 10 great questions while spending time outdoors this summer with kids.

My boys are just six short weeks away from summer vacation and I’m not sure who is more excited--them or me!

In Southern California, we spend a lot of time outdoors and I’m itching to plan beach days and mountain hikes with the whole family. It’s also a perfect time to peel away the layers of our children’s hearts and get to know them in meaningful ways.

Recently, I realized that I take a lot for granted with my kids. I assume I really know what’s going on in their hearts and minds, when really, things change and I don’t even realize it. My fourth grade son recently told me he wanted a pink Easter basket because it was one of his favorite colors. I could have sworn he still loved blue the best, but nope! Pink it is. I often miss out on getting to know my kids because I simply forget to ask them questions! Summer is a perfect time to unearth all those amazing things about our kids that they may be keeping under wraps.

God delights in us as His children. He loves us so much that He is even counts the number of hairs on our heads:

Are not five sparrows sold for two pennies? Yet not one of them is forgotten by God. Indeed, the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Don’t be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.” (Luke 12:6-7, NIV)

We can show our love and interest in our kids, just like God does, by taking the time to learn about the things that make them tick. This summer, join me in making quality family time that much better by intentionally connecting with your kids.

10 Great Questions While Spending Time Outdoors This Summer:

1) What do you like best about God’s creation all around us right now?
2) Look at the clouds today! What shapes do you see?
3) It’s hot out today! What do you think is the best way to cool down?
4) Let’s play a color game and see if we can spot 20 objects that are all the same color. What color would you pick for us to start with?
5) What was the most physically challenging thing you did today?
6) Do you like the temperature outside? Why or why not?
7)Why do you think God made such pretty views like this?
8)What’s your favorite way to cool down from the hot summer sun?
9) If you could choose one outdoor activity for our family to do this summer, what would you choose?
10) How’s your heart feeling today?

I admit that too often I go into “autopilot” when it comes to my kids. These types of intentional questions spark memorable conversations and help us to delight in what makes our children the unique and wonderful gifts that God designed them to be!

May you experience the joy of discovery not only in the world around you this summer, but within the hearts of your kids!
