Fun Family Fondue Night
Almost accidentally, I’ve started some family food traditions that my kids now rely on every single year! We have cinnamon rolls for Christmas morning, donuts for birthdays, and peppermint ice cream for Christmas Eve. One of the most anticipated traditions, though, is chocolate fondue! We serve this for Valentine’s Day, but it is perfect for almost any celebration—a special birthday, the first day of spring, or the last day of school.
Fondue is delicious, but it’s also an extraordinarily fun way to eat dessert! The chocolate is rich and creamy, and the dipping tray can reflect each person’s favorite treats. Some of my kids insist on marshmallows, and some love the fruit. You can get as creative as you want with it!
The first step is to make the chocolate. We have a fondue pot specifically designed for this. It gets hot enough to melt the chocolate (without burning it), but it also has a warm setting. If you don’t have a fondue pot, you can prepare the chocolate on the stove, but you may need to heat the chocolate again if it gets too thick or cold. It’s worth using a high-quality chocolate for fondue. Most grocery stores carry at least one higher-end brand of chocolate chips.
While the chocolate is melting, gather the items that you want to dip. Anything that would be good covered in chocolate is fair game! Our favorites are fruit (strawberries, bananas, raspberries, apples), pretzels, pound cake, vanilla wafers, graham crackers, and marshmallows.
Next, let everyone dig in! We use long wooden skewers for dipping, but you can also use toothpicks or fingers! Fondue is a slow dessert, so enjoy the conversation and laughs while your family is gathered around the table.
10 oz. of high-quality chocolate chips
1/4-1/2 c. half and half or heavy cream
1/2 t. vanilla
Heat the chocolate and cream slowly on the stove (or in a fondue pot) until the chocolate is melted and warm. Add the vanilla. Adjust the cream to reach the consistency desired. You want it thick enough to not drip everywhere but creamy enough to coat your snacks.
