Moms and the Lure of Technology & Better Mom Monday's Link-up!!

technology

technology

Ever find yourself mindlessly checking your email, or rehashing already-read Facebook posts? Ever long for days uninterrupted by the computer?

Somehow it happened to me…I got hooked on technology. I felt myself needing it, wanting it, and - quite honestly - a little addicted to it.

I don't really have an “addictive” personality. But to tired moms like me, the grown-up online world can be quite appealing. It’s just more interesting than Curious George and dicing oranges.

It can feel like a hard battle to fight.

But I’m proud to say, I’m making progress. Here’s what I’m doing.

  1. I gave up internet on Sunday. My husband joins me; we’re surprised how much we enjoy it!

  2. I disabled social media notifications on my iphone.

  3. I’ve set boundaries on my internet use. I’ve pledged to be online four times a day – three times briefly during the day, and working on blog or projects nightly. No more compulsive “checking.”

  4. I’ve been reading The Unwired Mom: Choosing to Live Free in an Internet Addicted World, by Sarah Mae. She shares her story of internet addiction as well as many practical tips for better discipline in this area.

Don't get me wrong; the internet can be a wonderful thing. I love blogging, and I love connecting with friends near and far away.

But even good things can turn oppressive, and burdening. I'm so grateful that the Lord breaks us from our idols, and rescues us to serve him in freedom and peace.

I've realized that as I put technology in its rightful place, good things happen in my life. Here are a few:

  • I become more comfortable (again) with boredom. As it turns out, lots of life happens in boring moments. You just have to wait for it.

  • I read more books. Old paper ones, even.

  • I spend less time basically focused on myself.

  • My husband and I talk more - long conversations about things that matter.

  • I have less guilt over missing life.

Do you ever feel too attached to the internet? What’s worked for you to enjoy it properly?

Blessings,

Jessica, Smartter Each Day
