A Healthy Pregnancy in the Fall

Living a healthy lifestyle is always important, but it is especially important during pregnancy, when so many of your lifestyle choices will directly affect you little bundle of joy. Healthy lifestyle choices are often difficult to implement and stick to during the fall season, when the cold weather keeps everyone indoors, and there are always delicious treats available. With the holiday gatherings and family events, it is easy to over indulge, especially when some well-meaning family members expect pregnant women to eat everything in sight.

During my fall pregnancy, I tried to learn as much as possible about how to stay healthy. I ate well rounded meals and healthy snacks, and I avoided very sugary and fattening processed foods. Of course, I gave in to some sweets at holiday events, but I always considered the portion sizes. As difficult as it may seem, I also made some time for exercise, whether it was stopping by the gym or doing work-outs at home.

Once I began staying healthy during pregnancy, I easily noticed an increase in energy, and I was better able to enjoy my pregnancy, especially because I knew I was doing what's best for baby. My healthy lifestyle choices were not complicated, and I was not going overboard. I also spoke with my doctor about everything- healthy eating, cord blood, and even diaper changing!

Here are a few of the most important tips for staying healthy during a fall pregnancy:

1. Eat plenty of fruits and vegetables, and try to buy organic when you can. Watch for sales, as organic foods can be expensive.

2. It may seem easy to grab prepared foods for snacking and dinner, but take the time to create healthy meals for breakfast and dinner, and eat the leftovers for lunch. For quick snacks, grab fruits and sliced veggies, as well as nuts and small portions of cheese.

3. Avoid too many sugars and dairy. Simple carbs may increase your energy for a moment, but you will crash later. Too many carbs and dairy will make you feel sluggish and weighed down, and they will cause weight gain if eaten in excess.

4. Pregnant women can often feel achy, especially with headaches and backaches. Instead of taking medications, try natural remedies. Remove yourself from stress whenever possible, and take time to relax and recover. Foot and back massages can make a big difference throughout pregnancy.

5. Stay hydrated. Pregnant women need a lot of water, so drink up. Avoid sugary and caffeinated drinks. This is a very important point, because dehydration is a common cause of feeling tired.

6. Stay active, and schedule walks and moderate exercise. You may not feel like it, but activity will make for an easier pregnancy, labor, and recovery.

I had a great experience during my fall pregnancy. I got to enjoy a lot of holiday gatherings and events, all while nourishing a baby inside. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle in the fall was easy, and kept me feeling energized and in control of this amazing time in my life.
