How To Trust God

Have you ever wondered about this verse?

"Truly I tell you, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you."  Matthew 17:20

Faith as small as a mustard seedmustard flower

I have been a Christian for a long time and I recently realized that there are some verses that puzzle me, but I don't ask questions.  I just keep plugging along in my Christian walk without asking those questions.  Questions like:

I'm sure I have way more faith than a mustard seed, why can't I move a mountain?

This week I was reading that verse and I realized to my shock:  I don't have faith.  Not even as small as a mustard seed.  At least, not in some areas.  Sometimes I:

  • ... go to bed hopeless that God can change me, that He can make me a more loving and patient mom.
  • ... doubt He will give me the tools I need to understand and discipline my children.
  • ... wake up overwhelmed and don't think I can handle the day ahead.

My mountains of unbelief will not move.  I can't move them.

But Jesus promises me that if I have faith as small as a mustard seed nothing will be impossible for me.  Mustard seed faith?  It's really not that much.

Do you have areas where you lack faith?  Matthew Henry says in his commentaries "Faith is compliance with God."  And not having faith is doubting God.  It seems pretty crazy that I doubt God, but I do.

So how can we begin to be in compliance with God?

  • admit that we're doubting God and ask him for the faith we need (remember, it only has to be a little, tiny bit!)
  • find some promises from His word that ring true for us.  Promises like:

And my God will meet all your needs according to the riches of his glory in Christ Jesus.  Philippians 4:19

Because the Lord has anointed me...To console those who mourn in Zion,  To give them beauty for ashes, The oil of joy for mourning, The garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness"  Isaiah 61:1,3

The LORD your God is with you, the Mighty Warrior who saves. He will take great delight in you; in his love he will no longer rebuke you, but will rejoice over you with singing.  Zephaniah 3:17

Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you.  For everyone who asks receives; he who seeks finds; and to him who knocks, the door will be opened.  Matthew 7:7-8

  •  memorize those promises and recite them back when we find ourselves "faithless"
  • pray for faith in our specific "faithless" areas and deliberately choose to stop doubting God.   (I can get through today.  I can teach the kids without acting in anger.  I can discipline them according to God's, I can't.  Only God can do all that, I can let him!)

Where do you find hope when you lack faith?
