5 Scriptures to Combat Anger

How does a mom combat anger? For all our fight and gumption, nothing is going to be as effective at transforming our hearts as the Word of God. Here are 5 verses to meditate and pray over your heart and circumstance right now.

Anger is an emotion that I am all too familiar with. I grew up in a house full of anger and carried that with me when I left the home for my undergraduate studies at Washington State University.  I was a mess. It was there, nearly 20 years ago, my anger was confronted by the gentle love of Jesus and my life has never been the same.

One of the most effective tools that God has shown me victory over anger is through meditating and speaking His Word over my circumstance. Today I am going to share 5 scriptures I personally use to combat anger.

5 Scriptures to Combat Anger

1. James 1:20, "For the wrath of man worketh not the righteousness of God."

This scripture really helps keep me in check when I am tempted to give into anger. If I want to be more like Jesus each day, I need to make a conscious decision to do things that line up with His righteousness. If I give into the sin of anger I am in essence working directly against God, and I don't want this to be the case. While none of us are perfect, it is the everyday decisions that get us to a place of victory in Christ.

2. Proverbs 14:29, "He that is slow to wrath is of great understanding: but he that is hasty of spirit exalteth folly."

I don't know about you, but I don't want to be known for exalting foolishness. I would much rather display patience and great understanding in my marriage and to my children. This scripture always gets my perspective right and allows me to think before I do anything out of character.

3. Ephesians 4:26-27, "Be ye angry, and sin not: let not the sun go down upon your wrath: Neither give place to the devil."

While I try my best to not fall asleep angry, sometimes it happens. And honestly, sometimes it is for the best as it gives me the ability to "sleep" on what I was so upset about gaining a fresh perspective in the morning. However, as a rule, I try to resolve anything I can that would help me not to fall asleep angry. But what really gets me is that I do not want to give the enemy any place in my life - so even if I am still "feeling" upset, I will always pray and forgive before I lay my head down. And this scripture helps me to do so.

4. Proverbs 15:1, "A soft answer turneth away wrath: but grievous words stir up anger."

One struggle I've faced as a mother is keeping my mouth in check. I've witnessed how my harsh words can make my children hurt and angry and do not like it one bit. I've also witnessed how when I give a soft, kind answer that I am able to allow my words to be a healing balm. I love meditating and praying this verse as it gives me a reminder to choose what I say wisely.

5. Colossians 3:21, "Fathers, do not exasperate your children, so that they will not lose heart."

It really helps me to keep my anger in check when I meditate on this scripture when it comes to dealing with our children. As with Proverbs 15:21, I've found this scripture to be very evident when I act out of anger towards my children. Thankfully God's Word gives me the conviction to see my sin for what it is and the power to stand strong against it.

I encourage you today, dear mom, if you struggle with anger to know that you are not alone. No matter how deep your anger runs, there is healing power in the name of Jesus. And I don't say this to sound like a "good Christian" I say this because I have experience it for myself. I know for sure if I can have victory over anger, then so can you. I am praying for you and love you, dear sister! Together, we can do this!

In His Great Service,
