3 Scriptures to Improve Your Marriage Today

3 Scriptures to Improve Your Marriage TodayI remember how for our wedding day 18 years ago, my husband and I chose life verses to be shared and spoken over us as a couple.

That day was such as special time, but I admit moving away from the practice of refreshing my mind with these life-giving words!  So more recently, I've chosen some Scriptures to pray over myself as a wife.

The idea is to think and meditate on these, and with God's help, to put them into action!

Here are 3 Scriptures to Improve Your Marriage

Philippians 2: 3-4  "Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit.  Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others."

Oh my, aren't we prone to keeping score and making sure our own needs are cared for?

Now, I'm not promoting sinful actions, but talking more about our sometimes preoccupation with self.  As wives, we can be tempted to look at what we're doing compared to what he's doing and taking a tally.

Instead, the encouragement is to look to our own interests, AND to the interests of others.  We don't need to ignore ourselves, but definitely we want to steer clear of thinking only of our wants.

Our husbands need to us to care for them too!  What is eating at him?  What is he facing and needing support in?  How can you care for his interests today as well as your own?

Today, think of your spouse's concerns as well.

James 1: 19  "...Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry"

The women in our congregation are memorizing James 1 this fall, and so I've rehearsed this verse often!  Putting it into practice, especially the slow to speak part (ahem), is a more of a challenge.

How about you?

I encourage you today to pause more, listen more, and wait for your husband to speak without interrupting him and offering the 20 questions salute when he walks in the door.

Give him room and space in conversation.

I Chronicles 16:11  "Look to the LORD and his strength; seek his face always"

Long ago, I read somewhere that when your husband isn't doing all you'd desire, to design him by prayer.

This simply means to intentionally pray over him all of those wonderful things you'd like to see!  Definitely an act of faith, and yet, after sharing our concerns, instead of nagging on and on…we do better to step back and pray the request instead.

So often, we're looking at our spouses for change.  Yet, we must also look to the Lord!  He the one who will ultimately bring about change in our husband.

Today, pray earnestly, seek the face of God, and look to Him for answers for your marriage!
