Sharing our yard with others!

I look forward to summer vacation every year. My kids are in school all year – starting in mid-August until late May – and it’s always fun to have them home for vacation from school. About six years ago, when we moved into our new home, I realized that I had several friends who didn’t have a backyard for their kids to run outside during the summer and play. I thought that must be difficult with little ones and their energy – and living in an apartment all summer could sure get to feeling all cooped up!

That’s when I decided to start my own little ministry called “Backyard Thursdays”. I asked my hubby, who didn’t mind at all, if I could just invite all my friends who had no yard to come over every Thursday morning with their kiddos to play in our yard each week. We’ve been doing it every summer, ever since! My kids LOVE Backyard Thursdays because it’s like a huge play-date every week!

Now I have extended Backyard Thursdays to any friends who want to come, usually from church, but if they want to bring a neighbor/friend they are welcome, as this is a good opportunity to share the Gospel if they don’t know the Lord. We Mommies sit under our large avocado trees in our yard, where I have lots of benches and seating in the shade, and fellowship and chat. What a blessed time we have, too. So many kids come and my children have learned to use it as a ministry of sharing their things. I am so amazed how they’ve grown to understand sharing their things, too.

We have rules – a list of all the “do’s and don’ts” because we’ve seen our share of reckless play and behavior. But, most of the kids figure out all the rules by the second week and we rarely have a problem. I don’t allow the kids in the house – since it IS Backyard Thursday, not “in my house” Thursday. We have a bathroom just inside the back door they are welcome to use. I’ve encouraged the Moms to bring their own snacks or lunch for the kids. I have a time limit – 10-12:30 PM – as having a group all day long is quite taxing on everyone. It works well, the children are tired when they go home and sleep well for naptime! The kids all have to pick up after themselves, share, and be kind.

What’s amazing is that others have started using their yards during the summer, as well. We have two others that have opened their yards with pools for others from church to use. It is a blessing for those who have no way to get to a pool. Again, there are rules and expectations to be careful with others’ things, but it’s a good lesson for all of us to learn to take care of others’ things and be a blessing back to them.

Have you ever thought to use your pool or yard as a ministry opportunity to others?

Can’t tell you how much I LOVE this! This is totally the heart for our neighborhood-out-reach-welcoming-attitude that my husband and I want to keep :)

We like to open our home/yard as well and let it be a hang-out-spot for the neighborhood kiddos (we have several who don’t have parents home during the day, so summer means a lot of time just home alone), but I really appreciate the idea of posted guidelines. At our place, they’ve learned the “spoken” expectations, but I appreciate this idea to post them because in order for me to be up for a continual stream of kiddos, it has to stay positive and also not create work for my guy (as in when kiddos = yard/home destruction :)

One of the best home-changes we ever made was to transform our garage into a playroom (I posted the how-this-worked a couple of years ago). But now it’s all carpeted with carpet tiles and has grown into a fun hang-out-spot that I can easily monitor without feeling overwhelmed by all the little bodies :)

It honestly has been SO helpful because the “signal” that we’re “open for visits” is the garage doors left open and I feel a lot of freedom when it comes to the garage-play-room because it’s not technically part of the house (for some reason that mentally frees me up to let it be a little more chaotic out there :)

Our scenario doesn’t usually involve parents joining in, so the ground rules have to be pretty clear. What I’m looking for is inexpensive snack options though :)
I have found that buying a massive snow-cone-holder-pack to use as water cups and snack holders has been a great help! For our regular-regulars we have their names permanently written on plastic cups :)

Kara – That sounds fantastic too! What a great way to use your home. I’m sure it is a blessing to all in your neighborhood!

What a great idea! I think it’s sad that to join most kids group activities you have to pay to be a member. This would be a great way to get to know others.

It’s been a real blessing to see my kids learn to share all their things, too. It’s open so they don’t have to tell me if they come or not because we’re just opening it up every Thursday at that time.

I LOVE this idea!! Backyards are so small in our city that when the weather is not too hot (usually over 100 degrees) we will go to the park. This is such a great idea. Reminds me of backyard Bible clubs that we used to have in the summer for the neighborhood. Thanks for sharing:)

Thanks, Torrie – It IS hot here, too. WE have a two large avocado trees that moms sit under, but when it’s super hot I pull out the hose and hose the kids down or serve sno cones!

I love this idea! We just bought a new house today and it’s got a nice backyard, I can’t wait to start using it like this! Do you do any sort of Bible lesson or anything with the kids or just use it as a time for fellowship?

    • beckybarnfather

Kelly, I don’t have it as a Bible Study time, but we have extended the invitation to others who are unsaved and have an opportunity to share the Gospel. It’s also a great time for fellowship and discipleship with other moms who are younger.

This is such a great idea! We’ve just bought a house with a big yard so it would be great if we could do this too once we have children :)

I love this idea!! What a blessing for everyone involved!
Can I ask did you build the playhouse or was it a kit? We are wanting to build one this summer and I love the look of yours. Thanks!
