How To Figure Out Your Spiritual Gift

Do you remember in Elementary School the “gifted” classes. I had a sister who was in ALL of those classes – she graduated as Valedictorian.  I’ve always admired her intelligence – and truly she is gifted. I was the chatty sister – hence I grew up to write blogs!!! Haha!
If there was a gifted class at church it would not be exclusive because God’s word says we are ALL gifted!
Romans 5:6 says “We have different gifts, according to the grace given us.” Then it goes on to list some of the gifts which include: serving, teaching, encouraging, leading, giving and mercy. (I Corinthians 12, Ephesians 4, and I Peter 4 also talk about gifts of the Spirit if you want to read further.)

These gifts are usually called “Spiritual Gifts” and they are given to us freely by God’s grace to meet the needs of the body. When we use our spiritual gifts, the body is built up, encouraged and unified.
In the past, I found myself tempted to act like I had all the gifts (this was obviously prideful – I’m being vulnerable here) – I tried to be an encourager, evangelize, teach, serve, give, administrate, and lead. Then it hit me – I was over comitted and stressed out!

When I sense “burnout” I remember something my Greek Professor in college once said. He said “if you feel burnt out – then you are not serving in the Holy Spirit’s strength.  You’re serving in your own strength!” And then he said “I’d rather rust out than burn out” meaning he planned to focus on his area of giftedness given by the Holy Spirit and serve in that one area until the day he died!
So where are you on the spectrum?

Are you getting burnt out trying to do too many things for the body of Christ?

Or are you unsure of what your gift is and serving very little?

Many people ask – how can I know what my gift is? There are many spiritual gift tests you can take BUT I recommend that you get serving! As you serve, pray that God will show you what your gift is.
Get your feet wet trying all types of ministries. Volunteer to do different things for 3 months at a time. Find out which one lights your fire and excites you and which ones you dread. I learned through trying to coordinate a mentorship program that I was capable of administrating it – but dreaded the administrative aspect. I tried to write friends letters to encourage them but it fizzled out.  I’ve taken many women meals over the years but I’m not the best cook – it’s just not an area I shine in.

Don’t get me wrong – all of these ministries are necessary and vital to the unity of our body of Christ – but I think God has gifted someone else better for these tasks. But when I open my Bible to write a Bible study lesson or stand up in front of a group of women to share a devotional – my heart skips a beat – I get so excited to teach! It’s my passion – it’s what God “gifted” me to do and I feel compelled to do it.
What is it that you feel compelled to do?
What do you find joy in doing?
Have you found the ministry that makes your heart skip a beat with joy when you have the opportunity to do it?
That’s the Holy Spirit working in you!
That’s your spiritual gift!
Don’t just use your gifts for your family or employer – but use it to build up the body of Christ – we need you!!!

Now it’s your turn – share with us – what is your spiritual gift and how are you using it?

Walk with the King!

My spiritual gift is teaching. I am currently the Children’s Ministry Director at my church. I love getting to work with, and interact with the kids each week!

(commented also on WLW) When God created me, he put in a extra dose of feelings. My husband is a thinker, I am an uber feeler. This does not always come in handy, as my feelings can get in the way at times. This does come in handy, though, in regards to my spiritual gift. God created me to love people in word and deed. As a nice little curve ball, though, I am an introvert. So, it takes effort for me to seek out people, but my desire all along is to love them.

    • http://www.womenlivingwell-courtney.blogspot.com womenlivingwell

Megan – I love the way you describe yourself and accept that this is the way God made you – yet you are willing to go out of your comfort zone to show love to others! Keep it up!

Megan, I think you just described me perfectly and I am also married to a “thinker”. However, since I now have 4 boys 7 and under, I have become more of a doer than a feeler but I do miss being a feeler, even an introverted one. I too have to consciously work at seeking people, it doesn’t come easy or natural for me but the love absolutely does. I bet we could talk for hours comparing notes, lol.

Megan and Theresa–It’s called being a Highly Sensitive Person! I am one, too. If you google it, you’ll see there are books (written by Elaine Aron) about the trait that I have found very helpful. The books are about celebrating the positive aspects as well as dealing with the more difficult ones. :)

  • Kate @ Teaching What Is Good

When I was just a babe in the Lord (a 6 month old Christian) our church elders encouraged us all to work to find our spiritual gift. They said that for 6 weeks, they wanted everyone in the church to get involved in AS MUCH as they possibly could and they’d be watching to see where they felt God was really anointing us. Within the first week I had 3 elders come to me and they each confirmed the same spiritual gift for me. It was really cool!

And what I’ve found these past 35 years is that when I allow the Spirit to use my gift and I work from strength in my life, the weak areas are strengthened and are not nearly as weak as they used to be! ;-D

Thanks for sharing this sweet post today.

  • http://thesimplecountrylife.com/ Happy Thursday!

I loved your optimistic post today! I think my strengths lie in mentoring/counseling/one-on-one listening and sharing. I lean toward the “introverted” personality, though I am hesitant to label myself that. But in large groups, I become overstimulated and fizz out quickly… turning cranky and tired. However, I am revitalized by walking and listening and talking. I say all this, but check back in ten years… God will probably have me in front of a group!

What a timely post. I have never taken a Spiritual Gifts assessment and have felt compelled to do so…. to learn what my gifting is and to use it/them effectively. I love your encouragement to just get out and try as a way to discover them.

  • http://lostlupti.blogspot.com/ Heather Brandon

I have taken some of the ‘assessments’, but think my true gifts are faith and teaching. When I had to be hospitalized during my pregnancy, we ere given miserable odds that our boys would even make it to viability. As overwhelming as it was, I truly felt an innocence in faith at the time, I fully believed with all my heart that God would get us through one way or the other. I currently have 2 uber active 2.5 year olds, and always feel myself encouraging people to have faith, and to hold on.

This has been something that has been weighing on my heart! I do love to cook and serve, I love children, I love to write letters, I love to listen to people. I like being able to help when there is a need, but I don’t want do the burn out thing. So I really appreciate your post today. I will not do the burn out, but serve in excellence my Lord using the gifts he has prepared for me! THIS is EXCITING! :D I am not really sure where my gift lies but will be in prayer to find my true gift. Thank you for focus and direction! ;)

    • http://www.womenlivingwell-courtney.blogspot.com womenlivingwell

Oh girl – I love your heart and love for God and people! What a blessing you must be to your church. Keep seeking God in this area and he won’t be silent – trust that he will clearly show you the gift he has specifically given to you to use to serve him.
      Keep walking with the King!

Wow. This was right on time for me!

“When I sense ‘burnout’ I remember something my Greek Professor in college once said. He said ‘if you feel burnt out – then you are not serving in the Holy Spirit’s strength. You’re serving in your own strength!’ And then he said ‘I’d rather rust out than burn out’”

I have been in this cycle of burn out, and I’ve even been very much aware that I’m trying to work according to my own strength…yet, I have not been able to break the cycle. This was really helpful in helping me realize that I need to re-evaluate what all I’m trying to do that could be done better by someone else. Great post, Courtney!

    • http://www.womenlivingwell-courtney.blogspot.com womenlivingwell

Oh sweet Leigh Ann – you have my heart – I see myself in you!!! I am one who so wants to be sold out for Jesus that I start saying yes to too many things and then am burned out. I encourage you to step back – determine your spiritual gift and commit to serving in that area and saying no in the other areas. Not every task is meant to be for everyone – let’s not get in the way of the joy another Christian sister might have in using her gifts in that area! Oh and then you can enjoy the freedom of not being burnt out!!!
      Keep walking with the King!

I don’t know what my “Spiritual Gift” is, but I have always been labeled a “leader” in the secular world. No matter what I do, I seem to always end up “leading” in some way…I was always the “team” leader when playing sports, and I was a head coach for 8 years. Then, at work (I teach high school), I am somehow always asked to “lead” certain groups (the Algebra 2 group, the Data Teams group, etc…)

I hope to find out what my Spiritual Gift is. Do you think there is a connection between the two (Spiritual and Secular Gifts?)

    • http://www.womenlivingwell-courtney.blogspot.com womenlivingwell

Absolutely there IS a connection!!! Often times we are already using our gifts in other areas whether it’s in the work place, our community or at home. We just need to take our gift one step further and use it for God’s glory and purposes in the church. Seek out an opportunity to lead something at church – pray God opens a door and see what happens!!!

  • pagele

Wow, Courtney! I was just praying about this before I read your blog post. I was asking God what he calls me to do and what direction I should take in life. This is just what I needed to hear.

    • http://www.womenlivingwell-courtney.blogspot.com womenlivingwell

Keep praying and put action to your prayers – take a risk and dive in and do something at church. God will guide your steps as you walk forward trusting in him!! And watch out because when we surrender ourselves to God for his purposes – he usually does an Ephesians 3:20!
      Keep walking with the King!

Courtney~do you have a spiritual assessment test that you can recommend or is it just better to pray and see what we’re passionate about? I did a search but there are SOOO many tests online to discover spiritual gifts that it’s overwhelming to know what site is legit. This topic goes hand in hand with our Ephesians verses today~thank you!! ; )

Courtney~I’ve been thinking about my spiritual gifts lately and what “makes my heart skip a beat”. I would have to say writing cards of encouragement really excite me. Knowing the person checking their mail will find a surprise and maybe put a smile on their face. I have a terrible time “saying” what I want, but find it much easier to write it down and can easily express what’s on my heart through a quick note or card to someone.

Thank you for the post today and challenging us to seek our spiritual gifts!

    • http://www.womenlivingwell-courtney.blogspot.com womenlivingwell

Oh I am SOOO glad you have this gift becasue I know how much fun and how RARE it is to get snail mail these days!!! I know this must bless those on the receiving end of your card ministry! Keep encouraging women – that’s beautiful!

Beautiful post today. I have been on the burn out list but now utilizing the gift of encouragement that He has placed within me. I am generally an introvert but lately I feel God has been placing Words in my Mouth so I might be branching out to speaking and sharing those things He has placed in my heart for women. Blessings to you.

  • Cowgirl8929

Singing in church had Been one gift God has given me. I love to sing and that has been my passion for a long time. Another thing I love doing is helping people when they are down. I pray for the lords guidance in speaking to them and know it is his hand guiding what I do. Calling, sending a card, or as it happened recently I got together many scriptures and wrote a paper for a friend to help her see how divorce is totally opposite of Gods plan. I sent that and a book “Five Love Launguages” to help her in figuring out how to improve her marriage. Be in prayer for her. Her family needs it.

Courtney, my gift has been writing all along, but I didn’t know where to start. I started a blog sometime ago, and I am turning them all into a book. :) Your writing and ministry have been an inspiration to me, because I have also been blessed with the gift of chattiness, writing, and teaching

  • Elfinspired

Wow! I fell asleep last night praying about spiritual gifts! Mainly that the Lord would reveal the gifts He has given to each of our children so that I can encourage them in their work for His kingdom. My hubby and I had such a hilariously fun time one night filling out a survey on our spiritual gifts (it wasn’t suppoed to be funny — we were just being silly and having a great time with it). I was wondering if there is a ‘kid-version’ . . . or if that wouldn’t be a good idea, after all. Any advice on how to encourage our kids? I always get confused between our ‘talents’ and ‘skills’ and ‘spiritual gifts’. There MUST be a link between what we’re good at and what we enjoy and a gift that we could put to use for His glory. There just must be! For example, my sweet daughter is very talented at art . . . how could that talent/skill be used for His purposes? Which spiritual gift could this correlate with? Thanks for the thoughtful and timely post!

I loved that you shared about how you dreaded the admin work and how the letter writing fizzled out. This has happened to me countless times and each time I wondered what was wrong with me. But thru you I’ve realized that there’s nothing wrong with me – it just wasn’t what the Lord was calling me to do.
    Thanks!

  • http://blessedbeyondmeasure-ts.blogspot.com/ Torrie

This is such great wisdom and advise. I’ve been in church my whole life and have served in a variety of areas over the years. For the past 2 yrs I’ve taken a break from serving to allow God to re-energize me. I was burned out! I never thought of it like this before, but looking back on it, I was serving in my own strength for a long time. Recently, (after a lot of prayer and listening for God’s prompting) I returned to serving in a completely different area than ever before. It is without a doubt a “God thing” because I have more excitement and passion about serving now than ever!! This is what I know God has created me to do!

  • Bobbi

I am not real sure but listening seems to be mine. That and just general helping around where it is needed. I do like to participate in our womens quilting group too though. I love to listen to the little older women of the church tell their stories. And working with children…So I am not really sure, lol

  • Crafty Mama

Still figuring out mine. Great post!!!!

Don’t we often admire someone else’s gift and wish we were also blessed with it? I would love to have hospitality as a gift, but realize that I was mostly intended to enjoy others’ hospitality. : – )

Administration is one of my gifts – I am treasurer at my congregation. We had a couple years in which I had to learn to juggle and stretch finances. This helped my prayer life. Giving is another gift – while I am not rich, I do have a good income and simple tastes. This gives me the ability to give financially. I also do a lot of crafts and give most of it to chairity – baby hats for the hospital, prayer shawls, etc.

Thank you for sharing your gift with us.

A few years ago our church had a Spiritual Gifts Discovery Class. It was an extensive 12 week Bible Study. The Pastor that taught the class, and also developed it, had some very interesting things to say that help me even today understand how my gifts are to be used. He said this, “Your Spiritual Gift is not what you do, it’s more how you do it.” I get that, because I look at the gifts that I do not have and I am glad to know that it is not a free pass since I don’t have them, that I do not have to cultivate the characteristic of the same name. For example, I do not have the gift of mercy, but am I to be unmerciful to others….no way! What about evangelism, I don’t have that one, but we are all told to preach the Gospel, “do the WORK of an evangelist” I do it, and it is work. giving, do I get to not give? No, we all are to serve using these, it’s just for someone who is gifted in that area, it more like see if you can stop them! My gifts are discernment, and exhortation, and prophecy…..so as I serve, in every way I can, these gifts just always are right there. But I till clean the church, share the Gospel, give to missions, make food for the sick, and have people in my home whenever I can!

  • http://www.kincaidfamilyworship.blogspot.com/ Tina K

I just wanted to comment and say that I also believe that aside from all believers having a spiritual gift bestowed upon them at conversion, I think there are also gifts that the Lord gives for a season or time, not your whole life. Love your blog, and thanks for sharing this!!

    • Amber

Yes! A friend and I were just talking about this a couple weeks ago. We so agree. Isn’t it wonderful that there is no boredom living with our God? I think He delights in amazing us. In Him, there are gifts I have developed that I NEVER would have imagined for myself. Just because we have a gift for a season, does not mean that there will not be another season that looks different.
