How to Organize your Kitchen Spices (and be able to find them later!)

There is nothing quite like a home cooked meal seasoned to perfection. Ever since I first learned to cook, I have been fascinated with mastering the use of herbs and spices in my every day cooking.

It’s not uncommon to find me sprinkling, pouring, and dumping various amounts of seasonings in whatever I may be cooking at the time.

I’ve tried a variety of different methods of organizing my ample collection of seasonings; racks, shelves, cupboards, and more. But it always comes down to the same problem: it never stays organized for more than a couple of days…

However, I have finally discovered a way to organize my seasonings that is not only functional, but also pretty at the same time.

I’ve found that I prefer keeping my herbs and seasonings in a neatly organized drawer, rather than trying to sort through a jumble of various jars and bottles at the back cabinet.

If you have some extra drawer space in your kitchen, I highly recommend giving this organizational project a try!

To make your own spice drawer, you will need:

  • an empty kitchen drawer
  • half pint canning jars with lids and bands (a half pint equals 1 cup)
  • colorful scrapbook paper
  • glue (any type of craft glue will work)
  • labels (use plain white labels, a label maker machine, etc)

First off, check to make sure that your drawer can open and close with the jars inside. I only had one drawer in my kitchen that worked for this. The others were just a bit too small.

Measure, cut, and glue circles of colorful paper that fit on the top of the lids (circles that 2 1/4 inches in diameter work well to cover regular sized canning lids). If you like, get creative with your paper choices: red patterns for chili powder or paprika, or an Italian-style print for your basil and oregano.

Write or print the names of your herbs/spices on the labels and attach the labels to the circles.

Arrange in your drawer and enjoy the bright pop of color every time you reach for a spice. ;)

This may seem like a little thing, but I can’t help but smile every time I open my spice drawer. The colorful papers and labels make finding what I need a breeze, plus nothing can disappear in the dark corners of a random cabinet!

(Curious about what spices I keep in my drawer for frequent use? Right now I have: coarse & fine sea salt, ground black pepper, peppercorns, onion powder, garlic powder, basil, oregano, parsley, thyme, rosemary, sage, dill, cumin, ginger, chili powder, paprika, crushed red pepper, pumpkin pie spice, cinnamon, and nutmeg.)

Blessings,

Jill

I love this idea Jill! My daughters and I will be working on that through our break times. I am looking forward to the ease in finding the right spice!

a draw!!!!!! how simple and yet it has never occurred to me. i have a draw right by my cooker and that would be so much more useful than the clutter in my cupboards which always drives me insane and i’m like you, can organise but one meal later and it’s like gremlins have been in there making a jumble. right, i’m off to figure this out now!!

Love this idea and the fact that it would free up some cabinet space! I think we might give this one a try (using the shorter jelly jars though, to fit into our drawers). Thanks for sharing this great idea!

VERY CUTE! When we move again (which will happen) I’ll have to do this!

Love the idea mentioned below about using jelly jars. I don’t have drawer space but if I transfer my herbs to small jelly jars and place stacked around the perimeter of my cabinet, I should be able to see a lot more than I presently can. I think it will help having everything in the same style and size container. I can lable the front of the jar. Thanks ladies for the inspiration!

Yes, jelly jars would definitely work as well if half-pint ones are a bit too big. The only problem with that would be at my house, since I used so many herbs/spices that I would constantly be refilling the jars, lol. :)

LOVE this idea! I have my spices on a spice rack, but they always get in a jumbled mess. I look forward to trying this as a January project.

I love this idea – and I have lots of drawers in this kitchen (finally!) Thank you so much…and I know what you mean about smiling when you open the drawers…after I complete a big project I always have to go back and look…one day my husband asked “why do you keep opening the garage door”…just admiring my handiwork:)

Saw this on Cheeseslave! I’ve got TONS of spices – now I just need to find another drawer and some small jars. :) .

Do you have any suggestions on where to buy bulk herbs and spices? We have all sizes of different spices, and just throw them into a cupboard, it is so hard to find anything…

  • MommySetFree

This is what I do too. I use alot of herbs and homemade mixes and the drawer is so much better than a cupboard shelf! However I use the plastic white lids for my half pints. I must admit yours are colorful and cute. :-) I’ll remember your twist if I get the itch to be more decorative.

Well, to be quite honest, I wanted to initially use the white plastic lids too, but they wouldn’t fit in that drawer. About 1/16th of an inch too tall! :)

This is a good idea! I have my spices in magnetic containers on the side of my refrigerator. I got some magnetic spice racks from Bed Bath and Beyond and use the fridge instead of the metal plate that came with them. They are a little on the small side for spices that are used really often. However, the spices are organized (alphabetical order), easy to access and put away, and do not take up drawer space. Just a little twist on your great idea.

I’ve also seen the magnetic idea and LOVE it as well!

Would be really cute if you spray painted the rings a cute color and then coordinated the scrap book paper to match.
