Teaching Our Children To Study Scripture

Psalm 34:8 “Taste and see that the Lord is good; blessed is the man who takes refuge in him.”
The kitchen, it’s the place where I feed my sweet ones breakfast, lunch and dinner. It’s a sacred place where our hearts join as we feast on simple pleasures of temporal food. But it’s also the place where we as a family feast on the eternal truths of God’s word. As we rise in the morning, I open my “kitchen Bible” and we read.Words fall off the pages and fill our starving souls to the brim with hearty words of hope, joy, peace and comfort. And so in the summer of 2010, we feel compelled to write. The goal: to write out the entire book of I John by the end of the summer.
My beginning writer sits with pencil in his hand and the feast of God’s word before him. He begins to write out the Book of 1 John. He struggles not with God’s truth but with the writing. He wants to do it perfectly, he erases and starts again. He erases and starts again. He erases and starts again. God’s word is seeping into his soul as he labors over his word.
It’s my daughter’s turn. She follows big brother’s example. She sits with pencil in hand eager to write out the living water before her. She writes and laughs. She writes and sings. She writes and gulp gulp gulp the truth of God’s word tastes good!
Mommy sits down with her prayer journal and she too writes. For she can only teach her little ones what she herself has experienced so she writes. The words are so familiar. She’s been here before many times. The words are smooth and fulfilling to her soul. And her joy overflows as her children taste and see that the Lord is good.

Have you tasted the goodness of his word today?  Consider writing the truth of God’s word. Read. Pause. Write. Pause. Meditate on it – drink it, gulp it, taste and see that it is good!

Psalm 34:8 “Taste and see that the Lord is good; blessed is the man who takes refuge in him.”

Walk with the King!

Thanks Courtney! I have been following your SOAP method for my quiet time and really like it. My kids are almost two and barely four- we do a verse and bible story a week, but I cant wait to start our “kitchen bible” and using SOAP with them. What ages did you start? Thank you again for your bloggy ministry- you have made my life better!!

I love this idea of having the children going through the same study as me. Simple… yet profound!

I love the idea of using SOAP for your kids! Our son is 4.5, do you start this early? he is doing well in writing, but the reading part of it we are not there yet… I did by the Family Reading Bible so we may start to read it together as a family!

I love your enthusiasm – that’s great! At your sons age I had my children drawing pictures to go with verses. He’s still a little young and you don’t want to frustarte him. You could write a verse with a blank in it and let him write just one word for example “Children _________ your parents.” Let him write the word “obey” and draw a picture of himself with mommy :) !

I do this with my boys 3 and 5. We read a bible verse(s) then they have their own prayer journals where they illustrate what they remember from the story. My 5 year old knows his letter but struggles severely with writing things out. So we are sticking with pictures and memory work for now. I’m hoping next year to be able to do some SOAP with him.

what a fantastic idea! I learn so much by writing things down , I never thought how beautifully this could work for children!

Thank you so much for sharing this :)

a latte of blessings & giggles,
    Jeanie

My daughter is turning five at the end of the month. I guess its time for me to start. I’ll follow your advice to Mollie, Courtney, and have her draw pictures (she loves to draw.. and sing!) I can actually picture her doing like your little girl does. I’m really enjoying the study of 1 John myself, but I wonder if that is a little too intense for her. What do you recommend to start off? So far her favourite bible stories are of Samson, David and Goliath and anything to do with Jesus.

I love what you are doing and encouraging women to do in their homes but for some of us it just isn’t that easy. I don’t know if it is spiritual warfare but my 2 younger boys are so resistent to the Bible and my youngest hates when I pray over him. They both hate going to church and at 9 & 5 I am concerned. My 11 year old has a tender heart and even reads his Bible on his own. Not sure what to do but cry! I’ve been really avoiding the blog world as I find it only discourages me about all the things I can’t do right.
